The topic has been a tough one for me as I've often resisted awareness of my own bias. The author was able to bypass my resistance with this brilliantly researched and objective study of how bias works in the brain, gets expressed in our behaviors and effects the foundations of our communities as a whole. I came away from this book with a whole new understanding of how my own filters work and how the systems I count on every day have been influenced by our collective bias. There were several parts where the scientific information was so specific and academic that I had to read through it several times to be sure I was understanding the message. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from J Angel -- Asto must-read for everyone : This is a fascinating book, intensively researched, well-considered, non-judgemental and very timely. The book gives an insight into what compels us to behave the way we do, and how our biases shape so many of our decisions, actions and interactions and contribute to systemic inequalities and injustice. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- A book about unconscious bias that does not seem to be aware of its own bias : I am probably not the author's intended audience (I'm a sceptic), so it's interesting that I read this, as it flies in the face of the some of the claims made in the book (I am not guilty of confirmation bias, for example). I thought the first few chapters were interesting, and I was thoroughly intrigued as to where she attended university and why so many apparent racists were there (it sounds nothing like the university I am currently studying at). Later on, things started to get a little shaky in places. Take, for example, the author's claim that a stereotype perpetuated in movies is that Chinese males are effeminate. She offers "Fu Manchu" and "Charlie Chan" as examples, which is going back some 80 years, and somehow overlooks more recent examples of Chinese males in cinema, such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, who essentially beat people up on screen in their dozens and often exhibit superhuman strength. This seemed like such a glaring instance of cherry-picking that I couldn't see it as being anything other than an example of confirmation bias, which the author pays a great deal of attention to in the book, although, it would seem, not enough. However, I stole it away while she wasn't looking to read it because I've 'known' the author on social media for a few years and have great respect for her. My experience with it, however, was spoilt by excessive footnotes (sometimes half a page of footnotes) that detracted from the narrative fliw of the book. As an academic thesis, its outstanding and were I a psychology student, I may well have enjoyed this more but, as a more casual reader, I found it difficult to continue to engage with. 3/5 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2020 )

Dr Agarwal manages to take a heavy, vast topic and make it easy to understand and very enjoyable to read.
