It’s missing content, garbled and completely illegible. It seemed to be translated by someone who couldn’t read English! Returned it once and downloaded again just to be certain. Returning this garbage again. Penguin edition is perfect. This needs to be deleted from a Kindle it is a DISGRACE TO HG WELLS AND KINDLE. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2019 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Sasquatch -- Poor translation? : I recently purchased this edition for my Kindle reader. It was $4.00 wasted. I am a fan of H. G. Wells and after 60 + years decided I needed to read this book. It appears that this edition is translated from a foreign language and done very poorly. It is so bad that it is almost unreadable. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from F. Galloway -- The Movie was better : The movie was better – how often do you hear that? Not often. I listened to the audio-book which was very well read – no issues there. The problem is that I remember the movie well and compared it to what I was listening. Are we to believe that this scientist who was intelligent enough to build a time machine and have elevated conversations with his friends, couldn’t plan even one step ahead and construct a torch in the same fashion that a caveman could. After the first time of almost being killed in the dark, we would expect him to learn from his mistakes and adapt to the circumstances. The tragedy being that the young girl dies because of his foolishness. Had the scientist died it would have just been poetic justice. In my opinion, the movie had a more believable time line and the main character made mistakes but was able to learn from them as we would expect from someone with his experience and education. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Livie I. -- A Thoroughly Enjoyable Read! : This was my first reading of this classic. It'd been on my reading list for years. Mark Twain's quote about classics being "books one always means to read but never gets around to" came to mind as I was reading. I'm so glad I got around to it. Once I started it, I could not put it down. This story is astounding in that it was written in the late 1900s. I've enjoyed time travel stories for years, and now know that Mr. Wells is the father of this subgenre. I recommend this for all ages, particularly young readers. Even though I have never seen a movie or the many TV shows based on H.G Wells' book, I thought the book would be more about time travel to different places, not the one place in which the story revolves around. That being said, I really liked the book and the one place it was set in the future some ten of thousand years from now was fascinating, and the tiny human like creatures that inhabit the upper earth are quite wonderful, especially Weena... The author, who has a strong social conscience, brilliantly warns about the future of humankind. The Morlocks are truly scary, and the Eloi display the tremendous weaknesses of generations of pampered living. The Eloi do have good qualities, such as Wenna’s loyalty and gratitude. They are worth saving and teaching. The time traveler is brave and resourceful, but he also makes mistakes so his humanity is also apparent. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019 )

This particular edition was a little disappointing having a rather brief and superficial introduction. Moreover, the "Classic literature: words and phrases" section at the end (which sounded like an excellent idea in principle) seemed utterly unrelated to the text. It included words such as shabby and smallpox (both referenced to Huckleberry Finn) but none of the more obscure words from Wells' story - etiolated? cicerone? - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rose Quartz Reads -- A fantastic tale : For a short story, The Time Machine was so memorable for me. It's about a man who calls himself a time traveller, who tells a group of friends about his what he saw in the very distant future for humanity. Early Science Fiction like this fascinates me, because the ideas people like Wells was writing about reads as though it was written much later than 1895. Wells' science is believable, and the future he depicts is something that I could have never imagined. There are parts of his commentary on the growth of the world that I agree with and parts that I do not, but all of it is a fascinating interpretation of what a man must have seen of his own Victorian society. Despite the book's slow start, it is thought provoking and adventurous, and I would recommend it even if you aren't a fan of the genre. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 26, 2018 )

I got through this in one sitting and was slightly disappointed by how short it is and how quick that experience was! I just wanted more! To be honest, I’m shocked how much I enjoyed it, with it being Science Fiction, but this is why I love reading books and short stories from all different genres.
